Scientific Research and Development Activity

The aims of scientific, research and development activities are connected with the determination of strategic mission of the Banking Institute/ College of Banking to serve the needs of a financial institution. The main task is to systematically develop and provide the comprehensive knowledge fund of financial services and relevant economic and legal knowledge in the field of theoretical and practical knowledge for the education and activity of financial institutions.

The achievement of this task is based on the collection and evaluation of international and local knowledge in the field of theory and practice, on the evaluation of research tendencies and analyzing the information, which are important for the development of the financial institutions activity. This activity presupposes high requirements especially for the rational targeting of research and development for application needs.

The output of BICB and its exceptional readiness has met the high requirements of banks and other institutions. BICB scientific research covered the thematic scope of banking from 1995-98 by the publishing of 26 manuals in the form of education scripts. Further on these materials are revised and reedited again. At the same time our school has prepared and published the range of other books. With the following updating and reediting of books, which contain BIBC information on the specific position of the accessible literary sources in the Czech Republic, the school manuals cover the full thematic scope of the banking sphere and provide its theoretic guidelines which are directly used in practice.

Thanks to their professional level, they form the basis for systematic education at BICB and help provide the educational process at banks and other educational institutions with a multiple effect.

Therefore, the professional audience expects BICB to continue targeting its research in the field of computer backing technology, creation of multimedia programs, e-learning and special literature for distance education. One of the reasons for such an activity is first of all the current state of challenging tasks in education in the field of banking, insurance, state administration and other spheres of national economics. Multimedia education and e-learning are one of the possibilities of meeting/ help meet the needs of current education and training of the employees of banks, insurances companies and other institutions.

Other research and development results are dedicated to the specific questions of the preparation of the banking sector for the EU integration. This work was carried out with the cooperation with PHARE and touched the problematics of adoption of EUR in the Czech Republic (which is available on the CD for wider audience) and which is connected with the function of financial services. On the CD there is also available the English-Czech dictionary of financial terms.

BICB employees took an active part in the project task of increasing performance of corporation administration and management in the frames of the project EU PHARE Training in Corporate Governance (2000-2001). The aim of the participation in this interdisciplinary and public priority project was the integral linkage of the questions of banking business and other financial services with the general questions of enterprise and entrepreneurship. The following studies of this kind of problematics will help to find linking conditions of the performance growth of banking and non-banking corporations. The results of this work help the mutual understanding of the needs and possibilities of financial corporations and financial services users. This project involves the cooperation between both international and domestic institutions.

The tendency to respond to actual issues is reflected in the current BICB program:

- in the working out the methodology of bank interest risk control in the banking and financial sector in general

- in the defining the process of application of legal standards of EU payments system for the Czech Republic environment

Research and Development Involvement

The development of theoretical and practical knowledge for its direct application for the work of the bank and other financial institutions of the Czech Republic outreaches the frame of possibilities and activity of other academic institutions. Therefore such activities are still the main mission of BICB from the very beginning of its existence. The systematic care of BICB for the financial services knowledge fund development, which has resulted in the creation and publication of professional literature, is the main feature that distinguishes BICB from other educational institutions of this sector.

The place among scientific-pedagogical institutions and the close connection with the financial system pre-determines the BIBC involvement in competitive research and development environment and also to:

a) framed profiling/organization of activity character

b) aim of research content

Profiling/Directions of BICB Activity

to carry out the function of systematic knowledge fund development coordinator for the needs of direct application in practice. Thus to keep the records of the gained knowledge by following the international and domestic sources of information and to identify the priorities of the process of obtaining knowledge for the satisfaction of practical needs;

to directly take part in the enrichment of knowledge fund;

to use the results of research in one's conference speeches and educational activities.

BICB research and Development Content and Methodological Directions

to cover the range of thematic areas in the whole spectrum of bank and other financial institutions activities;

to give priority to knowledge which involves the dynamic development of financial services in the world and serve the needs of the Czech Republic integration in the European structure;

to base the content basis of research on the demand for educated workers of financial sector. This demand serves as the criteria for the definition/evaluation of the significance of individual knowledge and also the criteria for the structuring of one speech at presentations.

to directly apply in practice and to obtain/maintain the concrete meaning of one's speech at presentations with the help of different kinds of visual aids to illustrate general meaning and understand the presented information;

with the aim to deepen the practical usage and moral value of individual presentations and to apply the dynamic view of problems by giving the speech in such a way that it will contain: the historical roots of the problem; current state; comparison with the world trends; the perspective of future development with the special focus on the integration processes in the EU.

The pedagogical value of the publication is based on the methodological structure of the text containing the meaning of the given problem areas; key terms definitions, which give their clear meaning; the outline of educational questions and exercises; the key to exercises. The publications are didactically aimed at/presuppose individual work. They are graphically distinguished and clearly viewed and give the possibility of multipurposeful pedagogical usage.

Employees Research and Development Mobility

The forms of personal research and development guarantee at BICB are defined by the character of the focus content of relevant tasks (explained therein before), especially by the main requirement to thematically comprise the full range of bank activities and, gradually, other financial services. Specifically, it is important for direct application of the gained knowledge in practice. The achievement of these goals is based on the coordinated involvement of both internal workers of BICB and other financial institutions and academic centers which at the same time participate in the educational process at BICB. It is the form of personal security which allows a totally flexible choice of top professionals without the risk of losing the professional mobility of individuals.

The profiling of the character of BICB activity, as it was mentioned above, sets the following tasks before the internal BICB employees:

to conceptually direct research and development,

to work out the thematic structure and coordinate the particular tasks of the research and development program of BICB,

to provide an individual research , especially the synthesis of definite knowledge and its relevant connection in the frames of fulfilling interdisciplinary tasks. At the same time the carrying out of these tasks helps research to fill in the blank spaces of knowledge which come out/ are shown during scientific work.

The accomplishment of these tasks presupposes that certain internal BICB workers maintain the entire outline of knowledge about the theoretical and practical range of financial issues and services and the function of financial system. At the same time they should demonstrate the ability of conceptual activity and work performance for the development of financial services knowledge fund including giving speeches and presentations.

For the carrying out of these tasks the certain internal employees were prepared by their previous research work at the best academic institutions such as the Academy of Science, CVUT, Charles´ University and show their performance by the increase of their professional level.

This is the basis for the professional mobility of BICB employees from the point of view of new tasks in the development of financial services.

International Cooperation in the Field of Research and Development

The international cooperation in the field of research and development began in the process of the creation of some educational manuals in the past few years. At present BICB is persistent in the maintaining of high level of banking services and international system of knowledge development (which is in the coordination with the growth of international enterprises) with the help of foreign banking know-how. In 2000 this effort was manifested by the participation of the mentioned above BICB employees in the EU PHARE Training in Corporate Governance project.

Later on in the frames of BICB international cooperation there were made the agreements of cooperation with the same kind of institutions which are being closed now.

The contacts with some other foreign institutions have progressed in such a way that they made it possible to cooperate with their single representatives, who are the bearers of progressive knowledge in relevant fields. This cooperation will be effectively used while carrying out concrete research and development tasks. With its aim, BICB is looking for and using the opportunities to spread the information on its activity in the professional circles of different countries. Lately there have been published articles in the European banking educational magazine and in the national economic magazines. There are also being prepared short-term scientific-pedagogical exchange programs.
