What do foreign students need in order to study in the Czech Republic?
Together with their application, foreign students interested in studying on the bachelor’s programme at a Czech university must submit valid documentation regarding the completed level of education acquired abroad (General Certificate of Education issued by a college, etc.)
Together with their application, foreign students interesting in studying the consequential master’s programme at a Czech university must submit a recognized university diploma (BSc. or MSc.).
The process regarding the recognition of both types of documents is almost identical.
Who issues the certificate of recognition?
The certificate of recognition for documents regarding the completion of secondary school is issued by the education departments of regional authorities (corresponding to the residence of an applicant in the CR); the certificate of recognition for university diplomas is issued by Czech public universities that offer similar or identical fields of study.
Who applies for the certificate of recognition?
The certificate of recognition is issued upon a request submitted by the foreign student interested in studying in the CR.
The following has to be submitted together with the application for the recognition of documents regarding the completion of secondary school:
- an authentic copy of the foreign certificate of education or its verified copy;
- document regarding content and extent of education absolved in the foreign school;
- documents confirming the fact that the foreign school is recognized as part of education system by government, according to whose legal system was the corresponding certificate of education issued, unless it doesn’t arise from the foreign certificate of education.
Application for the recognition of university diploma has to be accompanied by an authentic copy of a university diploma or a notarized copy. In the case of university diplomas for the consequential master’s study, a diploma from the previous bachelor’s study is also required.
How to apply for the certificate of recognition:
The submitted documents have to be translated into Czech by a certified translator.
If not determined otherwise by an international agreement, the translated documents also have to be legalized, i.e. authenticity of signatures and stamps; the fact that the school is recognized in the territory of a country where the foreign certificate of education was issued has to be verified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of a country where the registered office of the foreign school that issued the certificate of education is located.
According to effective legislation, a regional authority only issues the certificate of recognition for a document regarding the completed level of education issued by a foreign school that, by its content, corresponds to study in primary school, secondary school or college in the Czech Republic.
If the content and extent of education at the foreign school significantly differs in comparison to a similar general educational program in the Czech Republic, the regional authority rejects the application.
If the content and extent of education at the foreign school differs only partly, the regional authority imposes a recognition test; the recognition test verifies whether the knowledge and abilities of an applicant correspond to the targets and content of education according to the given general educational program in the Czech Republic. The recognition test can also be composed of a practical test. According to law, an obligatory part of the recognition test for the Czech residents is also a recognition test from the Czech language, if it wasn’t part of the “leaving examination” at the foreign school.
